WF2018 Charity: Digswell Community Gardening Project
Digswell Community Gardening Project is based in Welwyn Garden City Digswell offering a supportive working environment to people from the local community, a number of whom require additional support. The people supported by the Digswell Community Gardening Project are at its centre. They spend their time growing plants, undertaking site maintenance, landscaping the site, and are instrumental in project development, management and putting on Community Events.
When the charity took over Digswell Nurseries in 1994 from the local authority its aim was to provide meaningful day services to people with learning disabilities. As the project has grown, it has offered more opportunities to more people from the community including, in the past year, the Princes’ Trust, Connect Club Charity, HACRO and the National Citizen Scheme. There are weekly activities for children with a special need with their school and close links with our neighbours at the nursing home next door.
Fundraising this year will help support a pagoda with seating and a ride-on mower.
The Project is open to the public throughout the year for the sale of plants. There is a coffee shop, children’s play area and newly developed woodland walk for everyone from the local community to enjoy. If you would like to find out more about the project and its work do have a look at their website and Facebook page.
