Cuckoo in the Nest 2018
Hello girls and boys… you can now download the 2018 Cuckoo in the Nest entry form.
A cuckoo lays eggs in the nests of other types of birds therefore “cuckoo in the nest” refers to something that should not be there, such as a hamburger in the window of a greengrocer’s shop.
Cuckoo eggs often hatch first and the cuckoo chick is usually bigger than the other hatchlings which it pushes out of the nest, in order to consume all the food that its ‘parents’ bring.
Because parent-birds will destroy eggs that don’t look like their own, female cuckoos have cleverly evolved to lay eggs the same colour and shape to the host bird’s eggs.
It’s amazing how many different colours and patterns female cuckoos’ eggs can be: blue, brown, green, grey, plain, spotted or mottled. One female cuckoo can only lay eggs of one type, specialising in the eggs of their local host species.
It’s a little bit easier to find our “cuckoos” so best of luck everyone!
