Tony Rook and Local History
For forty years Tony Rook has been taking parties round Welwyn village during the festival, telling stories about people and places. Every year the story is different, because he adds things, discovers things and challenges local myths and legends. Last year he was able to enlarge upon and correct the ‘well known’ story of Vincent van Gogh, who visited the village, and his sister who lived here. This year we should discover more about our famous poet, playwright and rector: Edward Young, who lived at Guessens, and ask: where was Welwyn’s famous medicinal spa? This year’s Rooks Tours are on Monday 19th and Thursday 22nd starting at the fire station at 7.30 p,.m. Refreshments are provided in the church half way round.
Every year Tony also gives a lavishly-illustrated talk about the village. This year he’s called it “A History of Welwyn, part 40 – Your Contributions are Requested” . It will be in Church House on Wednesday 21st June, starting at 7.30 p.m, with refreshments.
